COVID-19: Additional Information
RETURN TO SCHOOL GUIDANCE
The California Department of Public Health recommends that individuals with viral illnesses such as COVID-19, influenza, or other viruses should remain at home while they have a fever. They can return to school or work once they are fever free for 24 hours and the main symptoms, including cough, have decreased. Please check with your child care center, school or work about specific return policies after illness.
Should my child come in for a visit?
If you think that your child has COVID, you can administer a home COVID test. If you do not have access to a COVID test, you can contact our office for a visit. Please wear a mask, preferably KN-95 or N95 while in the office.
Children with COVID should be seen in the office if fever lasts for 5 days, if the patient experiences chest pain or difficult breathing, or if there are signs of dehydration. Please call our nurses during business hours to schedule.
If your child is in distress with chest pain, difficulty breathing and rapid heartrate, you should have your child seen at a local emergency room (ER) to determine whether he/she has myocarditis.

COVID Test informatioN
East Bay Pediatrics primarily runs a molecular test for COVID-19. This is a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) which has similar sensitivity and specificity to PCR and done in only 15 minutes. The test requires a swab of both nostrils (in the nose).
Home COVID-19 tests have proven to be quite reliable. Follow the directions on your COVID test closely - do not look at the test hours after the sample has been placed, look only at the 10-15minute window on the directions.

PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING
Reports indicate that the COVID-19 vaccine (any of the versions currently available) is safe for nursing mothers. There is also early evidence showing that some protective antibodies may cross from mom to baby when nursing.
We encourage pregnant mothers to get a COVID vaccine to protect both yourself and your baby.
