2025-2026 COVID Vaccination

COVID-19 Vaccine

COVID vaccine is now available for all age groups at East Bay Pediatrics. Currently, it can be given at any scheduled visit after talking to your doctor or by clicking on the COVID/Flu Vaccine Sign-Up Link on the right.

Current recommendations:
  • The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends COVID vaccination for all children ages 6 months to 2 years and all children 2 years and older who have not yet been vaccinated for COVID. High risk patients over the age of 2 years should receive COVID vaccine annually. Other healthy children may choose to receive COVID vaccine.
  • The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends shared clinical decision-making between the physician and the patient or parent to determine who should get COVID vaccine.
  • The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has joined with the states of Washington, Oregon, and Hawaii in a West Coast Health Alliance (WCHA) to create a recommendation for this season’s immunizations. See WCHA guidance here.
  • In mid-September, our state passed AB144 which requires insurance companies to pay for vaccines recommended by the CDPH.

Other healthy children may choose to receive COVID vaccine.

  • Which COVID-19 vaccine should my child get? Any of the approved formulations of COVID vaccine are safe. If your child requires a series of vaccines, all shots should be of the same brand.
  • I recently had COVID. When can I get a COVID vaccine? It is safe to get a COVID vaccine once you have fully recovered from COVID illness, including fever free and reduction in cough or other symptoms.
  • What are the side effects of COVID vaccine? Side effects of the COVID vaccine are similar to the side effects of other vaccines. The most common reaction is a sore arm. Some people may have headache, fever, chills, fatigue and body aches. These effects usually start within 24 hours of getting the vaccine and may last 1-5 days. Please call if you have fever for 5 days, chest pain, difficulty breathing or other significant symptoms after receiving the vaccine; these could be signs of myocarditis.
  • Can my child get myocarditis from the COVID vaccine? Myocarditis is a rare side effect of COVID vaccine, but it occurs much less frequently than myocarditis from COVID illness. If your child experiences chest pain, difficulty breathing and racing heart, please call or go to the emergency room.

COVID-19: Additional Information

RETURN TO SCHOOL GUIDANCE
The California Department of Public Health recommends that individuals with viral illnesses such as COVID-19, influenza, or other viruses should remain at home while they have a fever. They can return to school or work once they are fever free for 24 hours and the main symptoms, including cough, have decreased. Please check with your child care center, school or work about specific return policies after illness.
Should my child come in for a visit?
If you think that your child has COVID, you can administer a home COVID test. If you do not have access to a COVID test, you can contact our office for a visit. Please wear a mask, preferably KN-95 or N95 while in the office.

Children with COVID should be seen in the office if fever lasts for 5 days, if the patient experiences chest pain or difficult breathing, or if there are signs of dehydration. Please call our nurses during business hours to schedule.

If your child is in distress with chest pain, difficulty breathing and rapid heartrate, you should have your child seen at a local emergency room (ER) to determine whether he/she has myocarditis.
COVID Test informatioN
East Bay Pediatrics primarily runs a molecular test for COVID-19. This is a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) which has similar sensitivity and specificity to PCR and done in only 15 minutes. The test requires a swab of both nostrils (in the nose).

Home COVID-19 tests have proven to be quite reliable. Follow the directions on your COVID test closely - do not look at the test hours after the sample has been placed, look only at the 10-15minute window on the directions.

PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING
Reports indicate that the COVID-19 vaccine (any of the versions currently available) is safe for nursing mothers. There is also early evidence showing that some protective antibodies may cross from mom to baby when nursing.
We encourage pregnant mothers to get a COVID vaccine to protect both yourself and your baby.
