The FDA has approved Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5-11 years old. We expect the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice to also recommend use of the vaccine in this age group when they meet on November 2 and 3. 1.8 million children have had documented cases of COVID-19. Most of the hospitalizations due to COVID-19 in children were in recent months, due to the highly contagious delta variant. The American Academy of Pediatrics states that vaccinating against COVID-19 is essential to fight this pandemic.
East Bay Pediatrics has pre-ordered Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for 5-11 year olds and plans to offer the vaccine when it is available. It is expected that the FDA will ship vaccines in the first week of November. Individual pediatric practices like East Bay Pediatrics were only able to pre-order a few doses per location; we hope to be able to order more each subsequent week. Please keep an eye out for online sign-ups for vaccine appointments.
The vaccine is a two-dose regimen, but is only a third of the dosage for teens and adults.
