Prevnar 13 (added June 2010)

Upon the recommendation of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), we would like to inform you about a new vaccine – Prevnar-13. This vaccine will replace Prevnar-7 and provide additional protection against diseases caused by Streptococcus pneumonia – a major cause of meningitis, blood infections and ear infections (otitis media).

The vaccine is recommended for all children from 6 weeks through 5 years of age.

  • Four doses are recommended: 2 months, 4 months, 6 months and 12-15 months of age.
  • Children who have not yet received all 4 doses of Prevnar-7 will complete their 4 dose series with Prevnar-13.
  • Children who are under 5 years of age and have received 4 doses of Prevnar-7 should receive one dose of Prevnar-13 to provide the additional protection afforded by Prevnar-13.

Prevnar-13 does not contain thimerosal. The most common reported side effects from Prevnar-13 include fever, local injection site reaction, irritability and a skin rash. We feel that the significant benefits of Prevnar-13 far outweigh the risks associated with the vaccine.

The vaccine will cost $150 per dose plus a $28 administration fee. East Bay Pediatrics has proactively negotiated with several major insurance companies, most of whom will pay adequately for this vaccine. We have not been able to reach an agreement with HealthNet PPO nor we were able to negotiate with every small insurance company. Patients who have HealthNet PPO or one of these smaller insurance companies will be responsible for the difference between the insurance payment and the actual cost of giving the vaccine. Once your insurance company notifies us that they will provide adequate payment for this vaccine, we will rescind this policy and include this vaccine as a covered benefit.

If you choose not to have your child receive the vaccine in our office, we urge you to obtain the vaccine at the Department of Health.

Measles and Pertussis in California! (added May 2010)

The California Department of Public Health has recently issued two Health Advisories: one for measles and one for pertussis.

Since January 2010, nine cases of measles have been reported in California, as many cases as in ALL of 2009. Measles can affect any age group. It is characterized by fever and rash at the same time. Fevers may be as high as 105 degrees; the rash tends to spread downward from the forehead. Measles can be prevented by the MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, and rubella) which is usually given at one year and at 4 years of age. Those travelling outside of the country should check their vaccine status.

Almost twice as many pertussis (whooping cough) cases have been reported in California in the first quarter of 2010 compared with the same time period last year. There have been four infant deaths from pertussis in California in 2010, all in babies less than 3 months old, compared to last year when there were five deaths over the whole year. The spread of pertussis can be limited by vaccination. Young children are vaccinated through the DTaP vaccine. Adolescents age 11 years and up and adults can be vaccinated with the Tdap vaccine (the vaccine can be given a minimum of two years after the last tetanus booster). In particular, those in close contact with young infants should receive the vaccine.

Morning Drop-in Hours NOW 5 days a week (updated January 2010)

Morning Drop-in is now available in both offices Monday through Friday except national holidays (see calendar for specific days). No appointment is needed for patients arriving in either office between 8am-8:45am on weekdays. Please note that your child may not be seen prior to 9am on that day.

Calling All Artists! (added December 2009)

We would like to invite our patients of all ages to contribute artwork for our Berkeley office. We plan to display the artwork in the waiting room and will change the pictures from time to time in order to accomodate all children who want to see their artwork on the wall. Everything from toddlers' scribbles to teenagers' fine art is welcome. We will provide the paper, if desired: 11x15 heavyweight white paper. Please include your child's first name and age.

Now Accepting Blue Cross Prudent Buyer (PPO)! (added June 2009)

East Bay Pediatrics has reached a contractual agreement with Anthem Blue Cross Prudent Buyer (PPO). Effective June 1, 2009, families with this insurance will no longer have to pay for services at the time of the visit. We will bill the insurance company directly. Families will only be respsonsible for non-covered services and co-pays. If you have any questions about this transition, please contact the business office at (925)438-1100, option 8.

Red Flags Rule (updated November 2009)

Starting July 1, 2010 the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will require East Bay Pediatrics to comply with Red Flags Rule in order to detect or prevent identity theft. You will be asked to bring a photo ID and present it to the receptionist when you bring your child for an appointment. Medical offices qualify as businesses under the Red Flags Rule because we allow credit card payments and because we maintain accounts with personal information.
